A few common accommodations are having extended time, speech to text, access to audiobooks, and a quiet environment to test in. These students are still learning the same material and are expected to master the same standards however, they are given tools to help them. Accommodations help students with a disability to participate fully in school and to demonstrate learning without being impeded by their disability.” The most important part of this statement is that accommodations provided equal access to instruction.Īccommodations don’t make the work easier, they make it more accessible. The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) states that “accommodations are tools or instructional strategies that provide students who have disabilities with equal access to instruction. Students who qualify for Extended Evidence Outcomes (EEOs) instead of the traditional standards are the ones who will receive modifications. There is actually a clear cut line for when a student will get one vs the other. I frequently had to remind teachers that modifications are very different than accommodations. When I would meet with teachers to discuss the students in their classes that needed support, I would always tell them that we don’t use the M word. ![]() They each have a specific purpose and a specific population that they address. These terms often get misused and are thought to mean the same things however, this is not the case.
